Life Means Life...
... or a conditional discharge, in some cases.
Contrary to my last posting, the Met have managed to bring to justice two kids for the murder of Damilola Taylor. I should be less cynical about the ability of the police and Scenes of Crime officers to uncover dastardly deeds. Anyone could miss a few spots of blood on some guy's shoes and it seems more than reasonable to suggest that you could have communal shoes which are worn by lots of different people as they stab to death 10-year-old children. Nor should the courts be criticised for the earlier trial in which they accepted the suggestion that Damilola died from falling on a bottle that drove itself into his leg.
More than anything, this case really demonstrates how fair our legal system is, that even the most outrageous and far-fetched of stories may be accepted by an open-minded jury. Is it any wonder that the imagination of the country's defence lawyers has reached an all-time high.
The eight-year sentence given to Damilola's killers has brought out the usual suspects:

- Those who blame the Crown for cocking up the trial.
- Those who think it is all the police's fault for not spotting the signs years before and magically preventing it.
- Those who think twelve-year-olds incapable of murderous intent.
- Those who think six-year-olds capable of murderous intent.
