How Oh How Are the Prisons Full?
The Telegraph excitedly reports how a burglar was trapped by his sweat. The bit of the article I am interested in is where it says he was convicted of six burglaries and took 96 others into consideration and was sent TO PRISON! Apart from my amazement at DNA trapping a suspect, and my jealousy at some lucky bastard getting his detections for the year off this guy, I am truly astounded to hear that they still jail people in this country.
I cannot recall the last time someone I arrested ended up in prison for the offence. And yet apparently our prisons are so full we are going to have to deport some of the foreigners in them. It seems a raw deal for the foreigners. The chances are the reason they are in prison is that, being foreign, they had no bail address and so the courts had no choice but to remand them in custody. Likewise there is no point giving a foreigner a Community and Rehabilitation Order as he will just go home and ignore it, or won't be able to understand it.
Some of these foreigners have only committed minor offences though. So why not decide on deportation based on the seriousness of the offence? We could solve the problems of over-crowding by sending anyone serving life, British or not, to serve their sentence in Somalia or Chile or somewhere. Serious offences that have resulted in a lesser sentence, such as most rapes, GBHs, manslaughters etc, could be sent closer to home, within the EU to somewhere like Latvia or Poland. That would free up plenty of space for the scumbags I arrest who seem to pop back up on the streets the next day. Their offences are minor, but the police time they take up is extraordinary.

I think the prisons are full for a couple of reasons.
1) 30 years ago crime was low compared to now, drugs have made a big change to crime. They have not built more prisons to allow for this.
2) We should start to double up the amount of prisoners in one cell. Prison is too easy and is not meant to be a nice place to go and take a break.
As I say prison is nice, three square meals and a roof over your head. More than the average smack head gets in civi street.
It's not exactly a deterrent is it!
What about bringing back the old past time of breaking up rocks, that would be good.
Another idea of mine would be to have chain gangs in the high street to scrape up all the chewing gum, this could be a reason to reduce their sentence.
I saw on the news today that a prisoner who was sent to prison for 4 1/2 years for supply of class A.
He appealed and got one year taken off his sentence, I would have added a year for his cheek.
O and build more prisons and put them there for longer.
Its the same 5% of people committing 95% of the crime, and I don't mean to teach you all to suck eggs.
