This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

A modern conundrum:

Honestly, the British police are SO indecisive.

One day we are risk averse, the next daredevil risk-takers.

When, oh when will we get the balance right?

Great example of the incompetency of our government, and shows a good contrast between 'dream factory office workers' and 'realists'.

to point out the glaringly obviously, Ex Chief Constable who earned his boots in the RUC during The Troubles says that we aren't doing enough to hammer criminals and the government targets are a waste of time, apologist upper class educated lawyer with less frontline police experience than my 5 year old nephew saying that Police officers are too risky.

I know who's opinion should hold more weight, but then the IPCC have always been biased against the Police and have the ear of apologist groups like Liberty, another group of people who don't live in the world that we Police.

Please don't feel especially singled out. We magistrates face the same problem. It appears we are so lenient we keep filling the prisons with people who shouldn't be there!

It is possible that both are right.

Some Police do not want to take a risk and are content to get easy "sanctioned detections" rather than risk the time and paperwork on something more difficult and others are rather gung-ho, chasing criminals in a 1 litre Metro when there are 2 area cars following, waiting to do the job properly but unable to, as the Metro goes into a spin and hammers in to an oncoming motorist - My Father. The Police do a very difficult job and sometimes some of them make bad decisions. This is not news, but accept that everyone needs to know what they could do better

And how would you justify the case of the two community support officers in Greater Manchester who stood there whilst a 10 yr old boy drowned apparently because "they have not been trained to deal with a water rescue"? They have been protected and did not have to give evidence at the inquest which suggests they were in the wrong but "protected" by their superiors. Whilst this is not a common occurence, too often the police are given undue protection when obviously in the wrong i.e. the case of the officer speeding at 120 mph in a built up residential area to "aquaint himself with the car" or the mistaken shooting at Stockwell. Yes, there is a general distrust of the police but you cannot be supprised by this. You reap what you sow. I have many aquaintances who are in the police (Hampshire) and ALL of them are bent in one way or another. One rule for us and one rule for them. (Saying that, the one that really worries me is the friend who joined reicently simply so that he could go out on the weekend and batter drunks! He loves it).
Stop complaining about being a copper and try actually doing your job without favour and with fairness. From the police I have met (socially) they are, too a man, racist, homophobic thugs.
Good luck being a "twenty-first century police officer". Personally I would be happier if you were a human-being first!

I wouldn't try to justify PCSOs in the first place. If you want your town policed, employ police officers. I know it costs more, but you gets what you pays for!

Mark,

For clarification I serve in Hampshire and would like to clarify the following :
1. I am not racist or homophobic
2. I do not delight at the weekends of 'battering the drunks'
3. I am not bent

However I am , disspointingly for you I guess :

Take pride in what I do regardless of the physical and verbal abuse I receive as a result of helping a member of the public.

I enjoy arresting the people that may be breaking into your car or house or assaulting a member of your family.

I will quite happily work 15 hour days in order that these people can be brought to justice.

I will always get that warm feeling returning stolen property to the rightful owner.

I will never make any apology for taking out another drug dealer who may or may not be carrying a firearm/knife or stop and think before doing so.

I know it is dull and disspointing for you to be served this way, do us all a favour shop the 'mates' you hold so dear and give us the decent coppers a chance
