Those that can't, search.
Schools now have the power to search pupils for knives. Whereas before, teachers could only search pupils using the common law powers we all have to protect life, this has now been formalised. I am, as always, delighted to welcome any new legislation that replaces the waffly values of commonsense and practicality which have pervading our culture for too long.I would hope that the new power is coupled with some codes of practice for searching teachers. I would like to see a form issued to each pupil searched, which should include a breakdown of their ethnic background. Moreover, teachers should have to give out a form every time they ask a pupil what they are up to. Once the safeguards are in place, teachers can be equipped with tasers - a move thought by some to be long overdue.
The latest announcement is hot on the heels of the "stop and question" power to be handed out to the police in a new counterterrorism bill. This power is sorely needed, as at present we are required to carry out searches in silence, without asking the person who they are or where they are going. I would hope to see prompt cards issued with the enactment of the new bill, so we know just what questions to ask and which answers should trigger an arrest. In fact, this could be rolled out to all scenarios, so that everything said by any police officer at any time is written down in statute and dictated by the government: that way no one can complain about it.

Do you think the teacher will have to record the ethnicity of the pupil and ask them to self classify?
On a serious note, I wonder what will happen when they find a knife?
If a pupil is prepared to carry a knife will they be compliant when searched, will there be a stabbing as a result. I am not convinced this is the correct way forward at schools.

when I was at school (an army brat) we had a couple of twats who thought it would be a good idea to bring knives in to prove how big they were. The chain of events went thus - PE teacher pinned them against the wall by the throat while geography teacher damn near stripped them naked in front of the class. Armed military police came in and nicked them in front of the class, their dads get called in for a particularly unpleasant chat with the CO, which resulted in said twats getting ten barrels of crap beaten out of them at home and not being at school for a week.
Funnily enough we never really had a knife problem at school, but then discipline was pretty much sorted too, nothing like the threat of your dads career and a subsequent kicking to focus the mind really. shame we can't do that now though, although I think domestic violence calls would be rife!!!

As a teacher, no f----- way am I doing this !
Two reasons:
(i) I'm not trained to remove knives from nutters + I've had far more restraint training that most teachers. Some of the people 'included' in schools are seriously dangerous/mad.
(ii) It will take ooohhh... seconds for some kid who has been searched to accuse the searcher of physical and/or sexual assault.

Im sorry you seem to forget that these are KIDS not convicts. Everyone should be included in the education system and given a chance, no matter if you consider them mad.
This law is stupid, I seriously doubt it will be needed and will only serve to increase tension in schools. The fact is if a CHILD needs to be searched it should be done by someone who has training to do so ie the police. Are we going to start training teachers to stop and search, restraint techniques, and give them handcuffs and a batton while we are at it? They could go on the same course as the police!
I would also like to point out this power could be abused by the teachers. What about the pedophiles amoung the teaching staff who may use this as an excuse for a feel. This is not as uncommon as many would say, my old head master went to jail for having child porn in his office. My old english teacher was fired for touching a class mate in the 'wrong way'.
I would also like to point out that not every kid who has a knife wants to use it for bad. I took my pen knife into school when I was younger, and only ever used it for scouts and to carve sticks into arrows.
What is the world comming to when we are so parranoid we have to search our own kids? It just goes to show the climate of fear this government has instiled in the population. Soon we will need to search kids for any signs of manure, in case they are a terrorist and want to use it to build a bomb.
