This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

Newsflash:

Chief Constable Michael Todd has been found dead on a mountain, having written letters to his family.

We'll wait to hear the formal verdict, and it was awfully windy, but I'm guessing on a list of reasons for Mr Todd to stay alive, this was not.

Update (12th March): My post is not meant in any way to offend Mr Todd's family. From all accounts he appears to have been one of the better respected CCs. But the job of Chief Constable must be ever more frustrating nowadays. We're already talking this month about the sad suicide of PC Ian Hardwick which has been squarely blamed on Home Office targets by his wife, hence the post.

We don't even know if Michael Todd did commit suicide yet, but either way I doubt the Home Office helped.

My condolences to the family and to his colleagues, I am damn sure that any thoughts of Jacqui Smith and her attempts to micromanage and destroy the Police are the furthest things from their minds at the moment.

The shame is that Michael Todd wasn't a bad boss. He was a nice bloke.
My deepest condolences to his family.
Mr Todd will be missed.

I think this post was inappropriate. Not the right time (if there is one) to link this man's death with Home Office targets.

We are all sorry that he has gone especially as he seems to have been such a good CC.
I think that if he really did end it all he must have had his reasons and the point that was being made was that whatever was going on in his life, the extra work-stress of meaningless HO targets would not have helped his disposition.

My thought too are with Michael Todd's family. Though as for the post being out of taste, there is something to say for the ever more pressure that the goverment are placing on officers and it is just as possible as the papers speculating that he had family problems. To be honest if they are wrong then surely they are far more hurtful. We may never know really his reasons, but it has been shown that work pressure is a major cause of stress. Unfortunatly I have had a collegue who could not cope with the pressure with work and took that option out.

I went to a colleagues funeral, after he was killed in Notts trying to stop a car thief. During the service, some of the speech was put over that although he loved the police, his faith in the service had been eroded away by years of the target driven service we now are. I was surprised to hear it, but it made sense, and there was a captive audience, including the Forces Command Team.

I also know personally of a cop who has committed suicide, and two cops that have tried and failed, and the reason....The target obsessiveness and subsequent resulting pressures of the police. Read the papers, and you'll find other examples around the country. Its not pretty, but its there.

Meanwhile, condolences to the family of CC Todds family.

Is anyone really suprised that the suicide rate appear to be rising within the police?

It's always been a tough job, which is quite simply compounded by the targets, stats and lack of ability to actually help someone.

Not to belittle Mr Todd's death but if someone who is completely removed from the sharp end of policing is driven to this - how many frontline officers (who have to deal with the drunks, the druggies and the scum of this country, not just a set of tough targets) must be close to the breaking point

I understand the despair of feeling like there's no point in living anymore. I suffer from a painful and incurable illness, but I'm also very stuborn, a fighter.
I have never used drink to drown my sorrows because alcohol IS a depressant which makes everything worse.
What HAS helped me over a period of many decades, and kept a smile on my face, despite all the adversity...is ILLEGAL. Yes, you guessed it cannabis, not skunk.

I cannot help but think that had Mike Todd gone up the mountain with a few spliffs, he would have come back down again to face whatever it was that took him to the depths of despair. He would have come down the mountain thinking, Ah what the f***!
Controversial I know, but true.

We will never truly know what happend in the last moments of his life, what we all must do is celibrate the life he did leave as a genuine top copper and father.

this job has given me things that I shall always be proud of and will remember, it has also made me literally sit on the edge and stare into the abyss. Thankfully I had my wife to help me through and I will give anything to help my colleagues in all too familiar situations. Having lost at least two friends in the job to suicide and seen retired officers die after only a couple of years of drawing their pension, I am more than aware of the darker sides of our job that they certainly don't teach you at training school. It also makes me want to choke the crap out of those snotty bastards who smugly stand there and say "if you don't like it then leave, you knew what you were getting into when you joined up"

There is a reason that the police federation life insurance is the only one in the UK that covers suicide.
