This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

That One-Eyed Scottish Genius

Yet another BBC presenter has wheeled out an apology for some senseless mockery of a much-loved public figure. Jeremy Clarkson accidentally called Gordon Brown a "one-eyed Scottish idiot".

"I see no ships, Barack."

This is apparently offensive to blind/partially-sighted people, Scots, and a lot of people with not very much to do in all this snow.

Personally I don't think it was one of Clarkson's funniest moments, preferring instead his gratuitous remarks about prostitute-abusing lorry drivers or women who can't read maps. And I'm all for political correctness: deployed in a timely manner it's my favourite kind of comedy. But when did it suddenly become wrong to mock the British Prime Minister?

"Any suggestion that equates disability with incompetence is totally unacceptable", spouts the chief executive of the Royal National Institute for Blind People. And seemingly the majority of the British government, media, and anyone else who has managed to get on telly, are all nodding along sagely.

Some time in the last eleven years and nine months, this country lost its sense of humour. I don't think we should gratuitously mock the disabled, JUST for being disabled. But making fun of anyone and everything is kind of the only thing we Brits have left, isn't it?

Next, they'll be telling us that we can't mock the police, which means we'll have to take things like this seriously.

Policing Pledge, what a load of boll****. To make things worse, I think that the silly photos taken yesterday of our team are to promote it.
Unfortunatly, they pay me the same whether I'm working hard, or aiding them with this nonsense.

Don't know how big an area you work but we have the call handler thing. WTF do they know and if it is an immediate we have 10mins to at scene. Despite city traffic. Normally manage though.

Can't be done with the blueprint promise or pledge whatever they call it in Blandshire. The job is seriously donald ducked.

Regards.

I agree that calling the PM a "one-eyed scottish idiot" was not Clarkson's finest hour.

However he redeemed himself, when given the opportunity by a two-eyed scottish idiot, with a truly great 'apology'.

“I have nothing against the Scottish and of course I regret making any remark that might have upset the disabled.

“But the idiot bit — there is no chance I’ll apologise for that.”

The accompanying giant banner headline in the Sun proclaiming "HE IS AN IDIOT" must have cheered Gordon up no end.

This business of abusing the powerful must stop. Why soon people will start to believe that the true definition of a Scotsman is "short arms and deep pockets and that golliwogs are harmful to the environment. Judges will hand out 11years to a one armed robber with a smoking gun and 6 months to a Doctor guilty of "Manslaughter". What the hell the patient is dead anyway!

Thank Heavens this political correctness hasn't (yet) migrated to the states. SNL has generated a local industry mocking the partially sighted Governor of New York. Would they send the Police to lock up the writers if it ran in Britain?

Or try this one

Surely all this PC stuff came from the US, gradually during the 70's, and was quickly adapted by red Ken and the GLC. Remember no black coffee, no blackboards, and of course baa baa green sheep. When will it stop?

Hahahahahohohee.

Reminds me of one of the few great moments in US politics. The very corrupt then-66 year-old Governor of Louisiana, Edwin Edwards, was being excoriated by the pompous ass stuffed shirt Governor of Mississippi, who called him "That old crook" on national TV.

"I beg you pardon," said Edwards. "I am not old."

Not so long back, down on The Farm, poor old "Snowball" aka Tony Blair, took a lot worse than being called an idiot.
The press "chased" the wrong one out of No10, and opened the door to the control freak "General".
Oh dear.

He gets NO sympathy from me for using the "disability" card. In fact it has earned him my everlasting disgust, because he has used disability rights people to "plead his case". He has given very little compassion, never mind fair play to people who are genuinely sick and disabled, who cannot work and who have to rely on benefits. The man is a creep and a blatant hypocrite.
And an idiot.

The logical conclusion of political correctness will be that we will not be allowed to say any words at all. After that, certain kinds of silence will be offensive.

After all, if you can commit a crime of 'Domestic Violence' by simply ignoring your partner for 8 seconds, what hope is there?

As one who is Scottish, if not partially sighted, I don't consider the 'Scottish' part to be an insult. More of a statement of fact, I'd have said. Same with the 'one-eyed' bit. I don't object to the 'idiot' part either, that's just Jezza's personal opinion. Didn't our grandparents' generation fight a war for the freedom to express our personal opinions?

Storm in a teacup, anyone?

Actually, Ellie, this will shortly become a criminal offence.

As I understand it, the EU Council has decided on a pan-EU criminal database. People will be included for the offences listed below. Clarkson could be nailed on several; so could you & so could I on most days of the week.

We already know that laws such as this will be misapplied; in the UK "anti-terror" legislation has been abused by many authorities, with British citizens criminalised as a result. Reading a casualty list aloud from the kerbside springs to mind.

Consider the 'crimes' that follow. Their implications are horrendous.

* Offences related to waste
* Unintentional environmental offences
* Insult of the State, Nation or State symbols
* Insult or resistance to a representative of public authority
* Public order offences, breach of the public peace
* Revealing a secret or breaching an obligation of secrecy
* Unintentional damage or destruction of property
* Offences against migration law - an "Open category" (offences undefined thus all encompassing)
* Offences against military obligations - another "Open category"
* Unauthorised entry or residence
* Other offences - another "Open category"
* Other unintentional offences
* Prohibition from frequenting some places
* Prohibition from entry to a mass event
* Placement under electronic surveillance ("fixed or mobile" - e.g., home, car, mobile phone etc)
* Withdrawal of a hunting or fishing license
* Prohibition from playing certain games and sports
* Prohibition from national territory
* Personal obligation - another "Open category"
* "Fine" - all fines, inc. minor non-criminal offences. Many now can be issued without a proper court being involved.

If you want to look at the original, you can get to it via Brussels or http://www.statewatch.org/news/2009/jan/eu-council-decision-ecris-14571-08.pdf

For every sensible copper with a sense of discretion, judgement etc. - like you, inspector gadget, the ex PC Copperfield and some others - there are many more humourless drones who will see it as a goldmine to be exploited. To the full.

Ray.

You sir are on seriously thin ice. A Scotsman is not as you described, but is actually `a Yorkshireman with all the generosity wrung out of him`.

Frankly I don't quite understand why Clarkson's comment has generated all this fuss.

Idiot: fine, that's his opinion and he is welcome to it.

Scottish: factual statement, and of no real relevance. A Scottish idiot is on the same level as any other idiot.

One-eyed: again, factual statement. A person's monocular/binocular status has no bearing on their level of idiocy.

I suspect that he was only using the "one-eyed Scottish" part to differentiate Brown from the rest of the idiots running the country...

I didn't realise that Gordon Brown only had one eye until Jeremy Clarkeson apologised for the comment he made.

It now explains why the country is in such a state. A definite case of "I see no economic crisis" Nelson type moment.

The first I knew about this was when I heard about the fact he had to apologise. Clarkson's insult would never have reached me otherwise (He was in Australia wasn't he?)
Now Clarkson got to make a wittier insult that was heard by millions more. I have also now been made aware of a disability that I had no idea Brown had but which clearly hasn't held him back. However I won't be able to help myself trying to work out which eye he is blind in next time I see him on telly, which will therefore distract me from he is saying.

I would call that a classic own goal by supporters of Brown and supporters of disabled rights. Much as I hate the man, I would have to admire him for overcoming a disablity to the extent that I never noticed it. However this furore has now meant that in a minor way I have gone from someone who saw past his disability to someone who will be obsessed with it, however briefly! Surely Disabled Rights were designed to prevent this?

If no reasonable adult can take Clarkson seriously, the amazing extent of a following addicted to stupidity, insults our Nation.

A maiden video depicted him igniting his own methane and by this means a classic degenerate captured 'celebrity'. As his maturity declines, we ought to assume he has nothing valid to say and focus upon whether a UK driving licence is something he can justify.

Oh dear Dr Mel T Gray, you appear to have "come out" as a supporter, if not a fan of the moron known as Brown. Now that IS worrying, because it contradicts your obvious intelligence. There must be some "hidden" reason for your lapse of good judgememnt. Witchcraft perhaps? The Dark Force is full of trickery and deception.

So, Gordo the Orwellian DICKtator is off to see Barack Obama, hoping to catch some of Barack's star dust to revive his own political career. The trouble is, that Gordo is STILL "The Emperor" and he still has no clothes. I can see that and so can many other people.

However, the BBC Newsnight people have refered to Gordo as "The Saviour of the World", which must mean that they are totally BLIND, or completely stupid, or he paid them to say that. Or perhaps they were just being sarcastic, but the trouble with that is that some of the public are naive and take it all in and actually beieve it.

NOTHING could be further from the truth about Gordon Brown.
"Saviour of the World"?, MY ARSE!
He has led this country down the WRONG ROAD to disaster, because he has been HELL BENT on bringing in his own Orwellian Big Brother "vision" of total control and extreme surveillance of the WHOLE population, which is fear-mongering and oppressive.

Not only that, he has blatantly IGNORED accurate, proven, credible Intelligence warnings about very serious matters, which have placed the people of this country, and the wider world in greater danger.
The man is a HYPOCRITE and a disaster, who will do the exact opposite of "Save the World".
