This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

There are other options...

Prince Harry is adamant that he wants to jet off to a war-torn territory where he will be the prime target of local militia.

I am really disgusted by the idea of the Prince parading himself down the streets of Baghdad with eleven men taking bullets for him. As a Royal, he should have at least fifty personal guards and be carried everywhere in a sedan chair, at the very least, before he even considers going off to fight. Moreover, there just has not been enough press coverage of the issue. I would like to see military code-words, base locations and the Prince's daily Iraq timetable printed in the national papers so we can all fully make up our minds. Then there should be a referendum and the public can decide whether or not Harry should go.

If the answer is a no, he need not fear. There is a job waiting for him on my shift at Blandmore. There he could undertake such character-building exercises as signing things, crossing things out and writing a great deal, and still receive the same amount of local hatred and blame for everyone's problems.

Be realistic Bloggs - you completely left out calls for a "full public enquiry".

Besides he probably excercises far too much discretion for modern police management to be comfortable with him nearby

He will be fine with the Royal Corps of Papparazzi giving him close protection at all times and the bad guys plenty of photo opportunities if they are stupid enough to go near the RCP!

It's the rest of Harry's unit that I worry about: men not overly-well equipped, who might have to put their lives on the line because a desirable "hostage" is with them.

Papparazzi? Believe you me, none will put themselves in harm's way!

Senator McCain's recent Baghdad walkabout was guarded by a score of Marines and two choppers. Harry won't get that level of protection.

So let's get real! Which world are you guys living in?

I'm with Bloggs on this one, if the bloody press weren't so keen on making a story about it by giving as much detail as possible about his movements then he and his men wouldn't face any more danger than any other British troops in Iraq...

My God - can you imagine how much paperwork must be involved in the dropping of a bomb under new labour? or the firing of an artillery piece? we know how much we have to do just for spraying a bit of PAVA.

He's a soldier. He either made the choice or it was part of the responsibility that goes with the role. Why should he be any different. To suggest otherwise is an insult to all the other parents who worry themselves stupid hoping for a daily letter phone call from their sons, daughters or which ever relation is putting themselves on the line for the Government's decision to send them their. I hope they all return safe and well.

Whoa, Whichendbites! The clue lies in the phrase: "Why should he be any different." Willy-nilly, he is different: a headline-grabbing hostage target.

Thus far, no-one has addressed my concern: that Harry's presence will place undue pressure on the rest of his troop (not to mention their parents).

Are international affairs utterly alien to this blog?
