Nostalgia isn't what it used to be...
You know the world has gone mad when police officers are calling for new employment legislation. Whatever happened to the police sticking to crime and disorder?
So today ACPO has pointed out that we will not hit the government target of 7% ethinc minority officers by 2009 without actively recruiting minorities. For once I cannot criticise ACPO. Anything that highlights the importance of government targets and the methods needed to reach them can only be a Good Thing for this country.
When, oh when will ACPO start calling for new legislation enabling Detections to be recorded out whenever a Member of Public announces that it is "them wot lives next door who done it"? March on the day that we can reduce crime figures simply by creating a law against calling the police. It will not be long before the last insidious traces of Institutional Commonsense are crushed from our nation's police forces.

You can't do your job when your time is being wasted in having to feed the multitudes my dear, as I have just reported upon.

Why is it that only the police seem to be trying to hit these targets. I don't see primary school heat teachers hand wringing about the fact the proportion of male teachers is far less than 50%. Come to think of it parliament is miles off representing the population for gender and race.
Diversity is fine as long as it doesn't get in the way of hiring competent staff.

Maybe we could massage the figures somewhat, like we do with detections!
You know maybe we could say that if an officer has been to another country for a holiday more than once the that counts as being a member of an ethnic minority.
I am sure the SMT could find a way to hit these targets by other methods than recruiting.

When accused of "institutional racism" ACPO's solution is to institutionalise discrimination in recruitment on the grounds of race.
Shurely shome mishtake.
Why bother upholding the law of the land when you can meet your targets by simply prostrating yourselves before the government and begging for the law to be changed to make the targets easier.
Difficult to think of a clearer example of ACPO's allegiance to the government being above its allegiance to the law.
Merit, talent, probity, diligence, aptitude, fitness, strength....no thank you.
