This is the official blog of ex-Sgt Ellie Bloggs. I was a real live police constable then sergeant for twelve years, on the real live front line of England. I'm now a real live non-police person. All the facts I recount are true, and are not secrets. If they don't want me blogging about it, they shouldn't do it. PS If you don't pay tax, you don't (or didn't) pay my salary.

Storm in a Laptop.

PC Copperfield has set off a storm this week. The pervading theme of the 126 (so far) commenters responding to a video of two coppers having the crap kicked out of them seems to be:
  • How horrible but it happened because of crap policing in the UK.
  • They didn't defend themselves very well. Police should be big and beefy and male.
  • I wouldn't help as I'd be arrested.
  • I would have given the offenders a good kicking.
I am in agreement with all of these comments. Police officers have become arrest-happy. Back in the good old days we never used to nick people for theft, criminal damage, or swearing in the street. Now, however, the Home Office has made these offences "recordable", always a sign that they want us to arrest people for them, as we can claim Detecty points for bringing them to justice. If we will continue to investigate reports of petty crime, we should expect to be attacked by chavs. Anyone who hits a 13yr old for being rude to them shoud get a handshake, not an arrest. And people whose Satanic cars subject them to a hair-raising police chase should be comforted not investigated. Bring back the days when we did not have to write down the amount of vandalism and minor thefts occurring in a neighbourhood, but could just tell everyone that everything was fine. If they will make us record this type of crime, they should expect it to go undetected, as we didn't investigate it before and we won't investigate it now.

As for the big and beefy issue, I agree that women are pretty useless in combat. They are a bit hesitant to get involved and don't do much good when they do. I have rarely been involved in fights during my service and only when they are already happening as I arrive. This is proof that WOMEN are simply not able to generate a good fight the way a man is.

Some worry they would be arrested if they got involved on the side of the police. We do like to bring people to justice for fighting in the streets, whatever the circumstances. I cannot understand the issue with this: if you are willing to help out your local force by thumping a baddie, aren't you willing to help us out by giving us a detection for public order offences?

I can't really argue with those who want to give the scrotes a good kicking. If only I didn't walk around in girly little high heels, I would be happy to help.

The event in the video certainly didn't happen due to crap policing it happened because half a dozen chavs were pissed up and full of themselves.
All other explanations of it are just people with personal axes to grind be they cops, scroats or just general members of the public
Personally I thought they didn't do too badly considering they were outnumbered two to one they drove off the chavs and were still standing at the end. Fights by their very nature tend to be unpredictable things.
I wouldn't help because I would get arrested, this provides a fascinating insight into people's minds. People help or won't help for all sorts of reasons be it cowardice, self-preservation, a desire not to get involved or just not quite realising what's going on. However people don't like to admit that, it's better to provide a single rational sounding (if untrue) reason to justify their action.
If I got involved I would give them a good kicking, like I say fights are unpredictable things.
You go on patrol in high heels? wow tell me you wear stockings as well and I will dream about it all day. I always did have a thing for women in uniform.

I honestly _would_ be willing to jump in to help the Police in such a situation. I'm not particularly brave, but I am the sort of foolhardy 'good neighbour' type who followed three large, male teenagers up the alley behind my neighbour's house. [They ran off when challenged, and I only realised the possible risks much later].

BUT how would the Police react if I saw a Chav vs. Cops fight such as this and did intervene? Especially any Cops who turned up AFTER I'd got involved? Anyone fighting would be nicked, n'est ce pas - even me?

These days, once you're arrested, the chance of NOT being charged/ given a FPN is minimal. I cannot afford any criminal record. So how could I ever play the good Samaritan?

I fear all I could do is stand there taking pictures with my 'phone and wait around to be a witness, post hoc. This situation isn't my fault... it isn't the fault of the Police on the ground (literally, in this case!) - but it IS the fault of the Police Service (force) who have allowed their staff to have their ability to show initiative eroded to so high a degree that the public find it hard to relate to them as people.
