Overtime Survey.
In 2003 the Home Office declared that the police overtime bill must be cut by 15% over three years.
Since then we have had a war in Iraq, genocide in London, a G8 summit, an Olympic bid, numerous terror raids and bomb scares, a fire at a refinery, a tsunami, and three Home Secretaries.
Morale seems to be at an all-time low (see Essex Police), people are leaving the job left, right and centre.
Even in Scotland the situation has spiralled out of control.
Yet many forces continue to cut down on overtime even where it has become an essential factor in resourcing.
For my next survey, I ask:
"How much overtime are you working and are you happy about it?"
Please email or comment. The results to be published next week.

I am working on average a paid day a month, occasionaly more. I am a custody skipper and the money is very useful. So the answer is yes I am happy with o/t as long as it is not excessive.
Good blog by the way

1.1 - I could mention the 30 minutes unpaid overtime rule, but then that would be another topic.......
1.2 - Working 9,10 and 12 hour shifts as part of the set rota, who really wants to work longer days?
p.s. Two passports hubby really should get a special payment for his daily devotion beyond the norm and there was I thinking you ladies were good at multi-tasking!

My working shifts vary between 9 - 11 hours, at this time i would love to be working some overtime (chrismas is on the way like it or not), however my current force have an overtime 'issue' so i get to do my 1/2 hour for the queen and then beg with a super to have any more, this leaves jobs to be handed over to other shifts and departments, stretching already minimal shifts and even offenders dearrested. So in an answer i want the money yet the force just wont give the funding. Somethings going to give

I meant to ask what you meant by EVEN IN SCOTLAND?
I think you will find that G8 (and all that meant to the folk in Gleneagles, Auchterarder, Stirling, Edinburgh etc etc) visited north of the border.

I get the odd bit of casual overtime at the moment, but that's because I'm still training. Once I've got my independant status, I'll be putting in for more - I need the cash!

I'm going have to flippin' well work overtime now the 3% issue looks like it's going to go on and on and on................

I work 9 and 10 hour shifts, I don't want the overtime or really need the money however one of the shifts who are on when I need to hand over to avoid overtime are like teflon when it comes to dealing with jobs so after having an arguement with their sgts / insp I usually have to do 3 or 4 hours 1 or 2 days out of every set of shifts which comes from their budget.

albeit unpaid, a usual 9/10 hour shift often turns into 14 as resources are low. There have been occasions when there have been four outstanding grade ones and the only officer available is yours truley. Where was it I read there are more police officers than ever?

I do around 10 hours a week. I need the money, the mrs wants to get married!

I do about 40 hours a month, half CTO, half pay. I'm happy to work it, both for the money and because I can usually take time off when I need to. I work on a Tutor Unit which is very flexible.

I dont do that much overtome. Inspectors don't want to authorise for payment and we always work short staffed other than bosses getting people in to help out. The overtime i do do isnt really enough money wise (after tax gets taken out there isnt much more!) so have it on the card, which cos of staffing issues i dont get to take it anytime

Young Mr Copperfield has a blog referring to the miner's strike. I was a proby at the time and wasn't allowed the opportunity of meeting the completely impartial Mt Scargill or his very, vert, faur cohorts. Instead I spent 5 months working 12 hours shifts - 6-6; 2-2; 6-10 (I think you get the drift). Bringing two pairs of Army DMS boots with me into the Police, I managed to wear both -pairs out, necessitating me to eat into my overtime payments to BUY a new pair of boots! After a while, you became used to the idea of shift patterns of this length and when the miner's strike ended, I found working a mere 8 hour shift quite difficult to come to terms with - the minute amount of money I susbsequently received at the end of the month did not help. Reading other's comments, it shows that nothing changes. The authorisities state that overtime must fall, HOWEVER, there is still the reuirement to provide a Police presence. The result is that so many officers stay on and do not claim overtime, which is just what the authorities are banking on. The answer is to claim for every single minute and then, when the budget runs out, let some other silly bugger, usually a senuior officer, sort it out. If they won't pay you, they can't make you work!
